Powder-Coated 304 Stainless Steel Ashtray Litter Bins for Souq Al Wakrah, Qatar

Souq Al Wakrah is a traditional-style market on the coast just south of Doha. Sand-colored lanes and courtyards run down to a promenade on the beach. In 2019, MAX Urban Furniture supplied more than 1,000 stainless steel waste bins for the site, each with a built-in ashtray.

The bins had to look like they belonged there. We powder-coated them in a warm beige close to the color of the souq’s walls, so they sit quietly against the buildings. The coating is baked on at high temperature, which helps it stand up to the sun, the sea air and the salt on this coast.

The bodies are 304 stainless steel, a sensible choice where humidity and salt spray wear down lesser metals. A lid with a handle covers the ashtray on top, so cigarette ends stay out of the wind and the bin stays tidy. The souq’s name is silk-screened on the front in Arabic and English.

Emptying is simple. Inside is a removable galvanized liner that lifts out in one piece, and visitors drop litter through an opening on the front. With over a thousand bins to look after, a few saved minutes per bin add up quickly.

The bins now stand along the beachfront promenade and through the courtyards of the souq.
